What is GIS?
Perry currently manages a Geographic Information System (GIS). GIS is a tool that
links information about a location to a map that shows the location. The technology is
comprised of computer hardware, software, and data which can be inputted, stored, updated,
retrieved, manipulated, analyzed, and displayed by the user. City employees use GIS for
the rapid retrieval of information regarding City properties and assets and as a valuable
tool for analysis, planning, decision making, and problem solving.
When you turn on your lights tonight, chances are a GIS is helping to insure delivery
of electricity to your home. If they don't come on, GIS is probably being used to
identify the problem. Packages you send out and receive are often routed with the help of
GIS. If you go onto the Internet and use maps to plan out the best route to your vacation
destination, chances are a GIS is making this information possible.

What are the benefits of GIS to the City of Perry?
Visualization (a picture paints a 1000 words)
The City of Perry creates maps from the GIS system for many projects. Examples include our official zoning map
and street map.
Improvement of Work Efficiency
GIS enables us to look up information quickly. Traditionally, to answer a simple question on zoning, we would leave our offices to go to file records and the map record to locate the pieces of information required.
Discover Trends and Patterns
Perry has used our GIS to evaluate changes in land-use that has helped us plan for transportation and utility improvements.
GIS Technology Improves Customer Service
The City of Perry will soon provide a Web-based GIS system to offer many
more benefits to our citizens and visitors. Information regarding our street system, properties, parks, zoning, and other data is available to everyone.
