City of Perry awarded big check to rehabilitate.

November 22, 2016

In the photo above are members of the Perry Housing Team and DCA Commissioner Camila Knowles. The City of Perry has been awarded $500,000 through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program administered by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) for neighborhood revitalization activities in Perry’s Sand Hill neighborhood. In an effort led by the City of Perry Housing Team the City prepared and submitted, with the assistance of Mrs. Sherry Kurtz at Grant Specialists of Georgia, Inc., an application for funding in April 2016 that focused on the rehabilitation and reconstruction of homes on Elaine Street in Perry’s Sand Hill neighborhood, a target neighborhood for ongoing Georgia Initiative for Community Housing (GICH) activities overseen by the Perry Housing Team. Sand Hill is an historic mill neighborhood with approximately 183 homes just South of Downtown Perry, many of them substandard or dilapidated. This grant will work in conjunction with a number of ongoing efforts in the neighborhood geared towards bettering the homes and lives of Sand Hill residents. The City of Perry will utilize the $500,000 in CDBG funds to rehabilitate eight (8) homes and reconstruct two (2) homes on Elaine Street. While the thirty (30) people who live in the targeted homes stand to benefit the most from this project, the entire Sand Hill neighborhood and City of Perry will ultimately realize the benefits associated with safe, quality, affordable housing in our community. Coupled with the $300,000 Community Home Investment Program (CHIP) grant awarded this past spring, this makes $800,000 that is now dedicated to housing improvements in Sand Hill!
