Historic Preservation Tram Tour May 5th and 9th

April 20, 2016

Based on an overwhelming response the last two years, Perry Main Street will host two tours of historic buildings in downtown in May. The free tram tour is one of the activities the Perry Main Street Program is organizing in observance of Historic Preservation Month, which is May.  The educational program will provide information about the history of Perry, its residents and its architecture.  Tours will start at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, and Monday, May 9. The route will feature numerous historic buildings in downtown, including the one-room Springhill School, the New Perry Hotel, the Armory building that now houses the Perry Arts Center, the former Houston County Bank and the tin-front building that was once the Toomer Funeral Home.  The tour will conclude with a brief visit at the Perry Area Historical Society’s Museum. Ellie Loudermilk of the Perry Area Historical Society will lead the tour. The tram tour will begin and conclude at the First Baptist Church parking lot on Main Street. Seating per tour is limited to 20 on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Participants are required to register in advance and to arrive at the church parking lot at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, May 12, is a backup tour date in case of inclement weather.   To register or for more information, contact Perry Main Street Coordinator Catherine Edgemon at (478) 988-2758.
