Free tram tour of historic downtown on Oct. 3

August 18, 2017

Perry Main Street will host a free tram tour of historic downtown on Tuesday, Oct. 3. The Perry Main Street Program organizes the tours in partnership with the Perry Area Historical Society as heritage education outreach.  The educational program provided by Ellie Loudermilk will include information about the history of Perry, its residents and its architecture. The route will feature numerous historic buildings in downtown, including the one-room Springhill School, the New Perry Hotel, the Armory building that now houses the Perry Arts Center, the former Houston County Bank and the tin-front building that was once the Toomer Funeral Home.  The tour will conclude with a brief visit at the Perry Area Historical Society’s Museum. The tram tour will begin at and return to the First Baptist Church parking lot on Main Street.  Tours will start promptly at 5:30 p.m. Seating per tour is limited to 20 on a first-come, first-served basis. Because there has been an overwhelming response to previous tram tours, participants are required to register in advance and to arrive at the church parking lot by 5:15 p.m. To register or for more information, contact Perry Main Street Coordinator Catherine Edgemon at (478) 988-2758.

Calling All Artists For Plein Air

August 8, 2017

Perry has sent out the call for artists in all media to participate in the Perry Plein Air Invitational Paint Out & Art Sale September 7th – 9th. Artists will create works of art “en plein air” – that means outdoors and on location.  Scenes from Perry’s historic downtown to rural farmland stretching to the horizon are waiting to be subjects.  Join other novice and professional artists and create your own portrayal of our incomparable Southern spirit!  Or just come watch the fun in the pleasant outdoors as the entire event allows everyone to observe the art in progress. You may even be inspired to purchase a favorite original. There will be a Quick Paint competition on Saturday morning near the downtown farmer’s market.  Artists may enter their artwork for sale during the silent auction and awards reception on Saturday, Sept. 9th.  The artists’ works that most impress the judges will be given cash awards.
