Tram Tours Coming in May

March 28, 2018

The Perry Main Street Program will host free tram tours of historic downtown on Tuesday, May 8, and Thursday, May 10. Perry Main Street organizes the tours in partnership with the Perry Area Historical Society as heritage education outreach.  The educational program provided by Ellie Loudermilk will include information about the history of Perry, its residents and its architecture. The route will feature numerous historic buildings in downtown, including the one-room Springhill School, the New Perry Hotel, the Armory building that now houses the Perry Arts Center, the former Houston County Bank and the tin-front building that was once the Toomer Funeral Home.  The 90-minute tours will conclude with a brief visit at the Perry Area Historical Society’s Museum. The tram tours will begin at and return to the First Baptist Church parking lot on Main Street.  Tours will start promptly at 5:30 p.m. Seating per tour is limited to 18 on a first-come, first-served basis. Because there has been an overwhelming response to previous tram tours, participants are required to register in advance and to arrive at the church parking lot by 5:15 p.m. May 15 and May 22 are tentatively scheduled as backup tour dates in case of inclement weather. To register or for more information, contact Perry Main Street Coordinator Catherine Edgemon at (478) 988-2758.

Eagle Scout candidate Hunter Hoffman recently completed his service project for the City of Perry. Hunter designed and constructed a new Kiosk/Covered Bench on Weleetka Trail. His work and craftsmanship is shown below.  The Leisure Services Department has been a strong supporter of the Eagle Scout program and is very thankful for our local scouts’ contributions to our parks and community.  We anticipate this partnership to produce many more great projects for years to come.

City of Perry grows towards a new City Hall

March 9, 2018

[et_pb_section bb_built=”1″ admin_label=”section”][et_pb_row admin_label=”row”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text”] City of Perry grows towards a new City Hall On March 6, 2018, City of Perry Mayor and Council adopted a resolution to purchase property in Downtown Perry with the intention of constructing a new City Hall at the site.  This visionary decision will help accomplish long-established goals outlined in the City’s Strategic Plan and will help the City better serve the vibrant and growing Perry community.  With this project, Mayor and Council will not only be addressing space issues and operational limitations associated with the current City Hall but will be working towards fulfilling their desire to relocate City Hall to a new location in Perry’s Downtown Development District, the heart of the Perry community. The City is in the process of finalizing the agreements with downtown property owners relative to the sale of the properties. The City understands the inconvenience this may cause for some of the property owners but appreciates the willingness to deal with the City and obtain fair compensation for the properties. As the City grows, so must our facilities and capacity to provide the superior services that Perry residents, businesses, and visitors have come to expect. The design process for the new City Hall will start shortly after acquisition of the properties is complete. The properties that comprise the site are listed below and shown in the map: 716 Carroll Street 718 Carroll Street 735 Main Street 741 Main Street 1002 Marion Street 1005 Marion Street 1006 Marion Street   [/et_pb_text][et_pb_image admin_label=”Image” _builder_version=”3.0.51″ src=”http://www.perry-ga.gov/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/20180307_NewCityHall_Aerial-3.jpg” show_in_lightbox=”off” url_new_window=”off” use_overlay=”off” sticky=”off” align=”left” always_center_on_mobile=”on” border_style=”solid” force_fullwidth=”off” /][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]
