Perry Receives Over $1 Million for Housing Improvements

The City of Perry received over one million dollars from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) to address housing issues in the Perry community. Georgia DCA Commissioner Christopher Nunn presented two checks for a combined total of $1,048,651 in federal community development assistance. The funding was distributed through the Georgia Community Block Grant (CDBG) and the Community Home Investment Program (CHIP) state programs. Perry received $748,561 through the CDBG program which supports projects that create jobs and assist citizens with low and moderate incomes. The grant benefits neighborhood revitalization and water and sewer improvements. $300,000 was also awarded to Perry through the CHIP program. The funds assist in the efforts of local governments, nonprofit organizations, and public housing authorities with providing safe and affordable housing within Georgia communities. The City will utilize the grants to improve housing conditions in the Creekwood neighborhood area.

Perry Recognized for Comprehensive Planning

The City of Perry renewed their statewide distinction in the Georgia Department of Community Affairs PlanFirst program. The City was first awarded this designation in 2017. The program recognizes the excellence in comprehensive planning and rewards communities that clearly demonstrate an established pattern of successfully implementing their Local Comprehensive Plan. Mayor Walker commented, “it is absolutely critical to plan. We started out around eight years ago with a very intensive strategic plan. This plan is very important to ensure funds are utilized correctly.” Communities who apply for the program are required to address four primary program criteria focused on having a proven record of plan implementation and success: goals, leadership, community participation, and implementation. The designation is for three years and enables a PlanFirst community to take advantage of various incentives that include public recognition, eligibility for specific grant opportunities, and certain reduced interest loans.

Legacy Park Honors Veterans

We were honored to host several veterans at the Legacy Park memorial signage unveiling. Legacy Park is one of Perry’s newest passive parks dedicated to our veterans and those who made Perry into the thriving city it is today. Visitors enjoy a tranquil reflection pool, picnic tables, and a serene landscape. Thank you to Georgia Georgia Water & Environmental Services who generously donated the sign’s material, labor, and installation costs. Legacy Park is located at the intersection of Main Street, Carroll Street, and Courtney Hodges Boulevard.

Stuff The Cruiser 2020

Help spread cheer throughout the holidays by taking part in the Perry Police Department’s ‘Stuff the Cruiser’ fundraiser benefiting the Perry Volunteer Outreach. Come out on Saturday, December 5th, from 8 AM through 2 PM to help stuff the cruiser for the holidays at the Perry Walmart. They will be collecting non-perishable food items and cash donations!

All non-essential City of Perry offices will be closed on Wednesday, November 11 to observe Veterans Day. Trash Pickup Information For This Week: Residential trash and recycling will continue as usual. Yard debris and bulk waste on regular Wednesday routes will be picked up on Thursday and Friday.

City of Perry Recognized for Excellence in Financial Reporting for Twenty Years

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the City of Perry for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019. The City of Perry has received this recognition twenty times since 1996. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. This award represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. Brenda King, City of Perry Director of Administration, commented, “the preparation of this report was accomplished through the professional, efficient, and dedicated services of the City of Perry Finance Department and Mauldin & Jenkins, Certified Public Accountants, LLC. Credit also goes to Mayor and Council for their support in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism in the management of the City’s finances.” The CAFR was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program which includes demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR.

City of Perry Named WaterFirst Community

The City of Perry received the WaterFirst Community designation by the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) at the November 3 council meeting. The WaterFirst program was launched in 2002 as a voluntary partnership between local governments, state agencies, and other organizations that work together to improve quality of life through the wise management and protection of water resources. A community receives this prestigious designation by going above and beyond state water regulations and demonstrating environmental excellence. Program criteria include watershed management, stormwater management, water supply planning, protection, conservation, education, and regional planning. The community must pass an onsite review after a robust application process and management audit. Perry is one of 37 Georgia communities designated as a WaterFirst Community.
