BOIL WATER ADVISORY UPDATE | Areas South of North Perry Parkway

Here’s more information about the precautionary boil water advisory that was issued yesterday.

Who is included: This advisory applies to all City of Perry water customers located south of North Perry Parkway. At this stage, staff is working to identify specific streets or neighborhoods through additional water quality testing.

Why a map is not available: Because testing is still underway, staff is conducting further tests to determine the exact locations that may be impacted. For this reason, the advisory is being issued for a larger area out of an abundance of caution.

Why advisories are issued: Many times, boil water advisories are issued as a result of low water pressure or water service disruptions. In this particular instance, however, that is not necessarily the case. This precautionary advisory was issued based on routine water testing results and is a proactive measure to protect public health. If you are within the advisory area, you are still encouraged to boil water before using it for drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth.

Testing timeframe: Water quality testing takes approximately 24 hours to complete. Results will guide the next steps and help us refine the advisory area if needed.

Notification methods: Updates are being distributed through multiple communication channels, including the City of Perry’s website, Facebook page, and text alert systems.

Original Post

The City of Perry is issuing a precautionary boil water advisory for areas to the south of Perry Parkway. The advisory is being issued out of an abundance of caution – there is the potential a health hazard may exist due to microbial contamination. Further tests are being conducted and will take 24 hours for results.

In order to protect the public from a potential health hazard, customers that have experienced water outages and/or low water pressures are advised to use only boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking, cooking, or preparing food. To properly boil tap water for use, customers should:

• Heat water until bubbles come quickly from the bottom of the container;

• Continue heating the water for one minute once it begins to boil;

• Remove the water from the heat source and allow to coolbefore use.

During a Boil Water Advisory, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that boiled tap water or bottled water be used for the following:

• Drinking

• Brushing teeth

• Washing food and preparing food and baby formula

• Making ice

• Drinking water for pets

Other activities such as clothes washing, dish washing and other uses can be done without boiling tap water, if done properly. The complete CDC guidance can be found at this website: https://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/emergency/drinking/drinking-water-advisories/boil-water-advisory.html

The advisory is in effect until the City of Perry has done the appropriate testing to be confident that there is no longer a public health concern. Customers will be notified immediately when the Advisory is lifted. Once the Advisory is lifted you should flush all faucets for a minimum of two minutes before using for drinking or food preparation.
