Northside Drive: A Plan in Action

When the City of Perry adopted the Northside Drive Small Area Plan, the vision was clear, extend the magic of Historic Downtown Perry into one of its most visible corridors. Today, that vision is already becoming reality.

Connecting Downtown to Northside Drive

The plan focuses on four key areas: connectivity and walkability, public spaces and beautification, design and character, and extending the downtown experience. By listening to business and property owners, Perry built a roadmap that reflects both community priorities and future development needs.

Residents asked for safer sidewalks, better crosswalks, improved parking, and greener, more inviting spaces. Those priorities are now guiding investments in infrastructure upgrades and public space enhancements that will benefit both visitors and locals.

Projects Taking Shape

The Northside Drive corridor is already welcoming new developments that embody the plan’s goals:

  • Chalet Lofts: A mixed-use project bringing 12 loft apartments and modern retail/office space to Northside Drive. This new development adds housing options and supports a vibrant mix of businesses in the district.
  • Fuego Fresco Mexican Restaurant: One of Perry’s newest dining destinations, Fuego Fresco adds flavor and variety to the downtown experience while strengthening Northside Drive’s role as a welcoming extension of downtown.

These investments demonstrate the power of thoughtful planning. When the groundwork is laid, private development follows.

Building Belonging

“Businesses and residents on Northside Drive are part of downtown Perry, and we’re making sure they feel that connection every day,” said Holly Wharton, Economic Development Director.

By emphasizing belonging, design, and walkability, the plan ensures that Northside Drive feels like a natural part of Historic Downtown Perry, not just a roadway leading into it.

What’s Next

Looking forward, the City plans to:

  • Upgrade greenspace adjacent to the Perry Events Center
  • Resurface and improve public parking areas
  • Expand placemaking programs like banners, public art, and events
  • Continue coordinating with the Main Street Advisory Board to bring energy and visibility to the area

These efforts, paired with ongoing private investment, will keep Northside Drive growing in step with downtown.

Since the plan was adopted, the City has further adopted the connectivity plan for the area which include the specific locations for sidewalk improvements, crosswalks, and pedestrian lighting.

A Thriving Extension of Downtown

Northside Drive is more than a corridor, it’s a gateway to Perry’s story of growth, charm, and community connection. With the plan guiding each step, the area is transforming into a place where businesses thrive, residents feel at home, and visitors get a warm first impression of Historic Downtown Perry.
